Karnataka Starts Releasing Cauvery Water to Tamil Nadu After CWMA Directive

Karnataka has begun releasing water from its reservoirs to Tamil Nadu following the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) directives, according to official sources. The CWMA instructed Karnataka to release 5,000 cusecs (cubic feet per second) of water to Biligundlu in Tamil Nadu daily until September 12.

Originally, Karnataka was asked to release 10,000 cusecs, but the state appealed due to insufficient rainfall in the Cauvery basin’s catchment areas. Considering Karnataka’s concerns, the CWMA adjusted the order to 5,000 cusecs.

Water is being released from the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) dam and Kabini reservoir in Mysuru, sources reported on Wednesday. However, the decision has sparked protests from farmers’ organizations. Overnight protests were held in Mandya and Srirangapatna in the Cauvery belt, opposing the water release from the KRS dam and Kabini reservoir.
