Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra is seeking a fresh perspective to elevate his javelin throwing career. The Indian star has announced his intention to part ways with his longtime coach, Dr. Klaus Bartonietz, and explore new training methods.
Chopra and Bartonietz have had a successful partnership since 2019, culminating in the Indian’s historic Olympic gold medal in Tokyo. However, a series of second-place finishes in recent competitions, including the 2024 Paris Olympics, has prompted Chopra to reassess his training regimen.
The javelin star believes that a change in coaching could provide the spark he needs to reach new heights. “I see many times that we are following the same plan and doing the same workout,” Chopra explained. “It appears to me that I must bring in some change.”
Dr. Bartonietz, a renowned biomechanics expert, has been instrumental in Chopra’s development. Under his guidance, Chopra has achieved significant milestones, including a Diamond League title and gold medals at the World Championships and Asian Games. However, the 75-year-old coach has suggested that it might be time for Chopra to work with a new mentor.
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) is currently searching for a suitable replacement for Bartonietz. President Adille Sumariwalla has expressed confidence in Chopra’s ability to find a coach who can help him achieve his goals.
As Chopra embarks on this new chapter in his career, the world of athletics will be watching with anticipation to see if a change in coaching can propel him to even greater heights.
