Olympic bronze medalist Lee Zii Jia is facing an unexpected challenge as he attempts to return to top form. The Malaysian badminton star, ranked third in the world, has been struggling with a series of injuries and ailments since his impressive performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The world number three’s recent first-round exit from the BWF China Open, following missed tournaments in Korea and Hong Kong, has raised significant concerns about his fitness. “It’s quite weird,” Zii Jia admitted to the Badminton World Federation (BWF), describing his struggles to recover from training and competition.
Despite leading comfortably at the start of his China Open match, Zii Jia was unable to secure a victory. He attributed his loss to his subpar physical condition, revealing that he’s been experiencing persistent soreness in his elbow, knee, and back. “I just can’t recover 100%. Once I train with some intensity, I feel soreness everywhere,” he explained.
Zii Jia’s fitness issues could jeopardize his chances of qualifying for the prestigious World Tour Finals at the end of the season. To address this, he has announced his intention to participate in the Arctic Open in October. “I have to get back to my best condition,” he said.
The Olympic bronze medalist’s predicament has caught many by surprise, given his recent success. His journey to recovery will be closely watched by fans and experts alike as he strives to regain his peak form and solidify his position among the world’s elite badminton players.
