Hangzhou, China – Indian tennis pair Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Vijay Sundar Prashanth clinched their first ATP Tour title together, defeating Germany’s Constantin Frantzen and Hendrik Jebens in the final of the Hangzhou Open 2024. The duo’s victory marked a triumphant conclusion to their journey through the tournament, which was characterized by comebacks and super tiebreaker victories.
The final match, played on Tuesday, saw Frantzen and Jebens take an early lead, claiming the first set 6-4. However, Nedunchezhiyan and Prashanth fought back, forcing a tiebreaker in the second set, which they won 7-6(5). The match then proceeded to a decisive super tiebreaker, where the Indian pair edged out their German opponents 10-7 to secure the title.
For Nedunchezhiyan, this was his second ATP Tour title, following his victory at the 2017 Chennai Open with Rohan Bopanna. For Prashanth, the Hangzhou Open triumph marked his first ATP title. The Indian duo’s success at the tournament was particularly noteworthy as they were unseeded and faced several tough challenges throughout the competition.
One of the most dramatic moments of their campaign came in the quarter-finals against the second-seeded British pair of Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool. After losing the first set, Nedunchezhiyan and Prashanth staged a remarkable comeback, winning the second set in a tiebreaker and eventually securing the match in a super tiebreaker.
Their journey to the final also included a victory over the third-seeded pair of Ariel Behar and Robert Galloway, whom they defeated in a super tiebreaker after being comprehensively outplayed in the first set. The Indian duo’s ability to bounce back from adversity and maintain their composure under pressure was a key factor in their success.
The Hangzhou Open 2024 doubles title represents a significant achievement for Nedunchezhiyan and Prashanth, who have been playing together as a pair since the start of the 2024 season. Their victory not only solidifies their status as one of the top doubles teams on the ATP Tour but also serves as a testament to their skill, determination, and unwavering belief in their abilities.
