Monsoon Season Poses Brain Infection Risk in India’s Rice Belt, Say Doctors: Here’s Why

Doctors Warn of Increased Brain Infections in India’s Rice Belt During Monsoon: Key Reasons

Doctors have raised concerns about a rise in brain infections in India’s coastal and rice belt regions during the monsoon season. High humidity and increased mosquito breeding are cited as major factors contributing to a significant rise in cases of viral encephalitis and other brain infections, which can be life-threatening.

Encephalitis, a rare but serious condition that causes brain inflammation, can result from infections or autoimmune disorders. While it can affect anyone, children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable. This condition can damage brain tissues, leading to various neurological symptoms.

Recent data from The Lancet Global Health indicates that coastal regions such as Karnataka and Orissa, as well as northeastern states like Assam and Tripura, and the northern rice belt areas of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, are endemic zones for viral encephalitis in India.
