Indian Weightlifters Dominate Junior World Championships

Leon, Spain – A contingent of nine Indian weightlifters is set to compete at the IWF Junior World Weightlifting Championships, taking place from September 19 to 27. The event, held in the Spanish city of Leon, will feature live streaming for Indian viewers.

India’s team comprises three men and six women, each aiming to secure a podium finish. In the men’s categories, Dhanush Longanathan will compete in the 55kg division, while Shankar Lapung and Arjunan Ruthreshwar will face stiff competition in the 61kg category, including Hampton Morris, the 2022 junior world champion and a Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medalist.

On the women’s side, Payal, Panchami Sonowal, Lamabam Nilam Devi, Koyel Bar, Sanjana, and Maibam Martina Devi will represent India in their respective weight classes.

The competition will be fierce, with countries like the USA, Colombia, and Spain fielding strong teams. Notably, Weightlifting Refugee Team member Yekta Jamali, who competed in the women’s 81kg category at the Paris 2024 Olympics, will also be participating.

India’s weightlifting team is eager to improve upon their performance at the 2023 edition, where they were unable to secure any medals. With a talented group of athletes and the determination to succeed, the Indian contingent is poised to make a significant impact at the Junior World Championships.
