Sowcar Janaki

Veteran South Indian actress Sowcar Janaki passed away on August 21, 2026, at Kauvery Hospital in Chennai. She was 94 years old. Her death marks the end of one of the longest and most respected careers in Indian cinema, spanning more than seven decades.

The news was confirmed by actor Nassar, president of the South Indian Artistes’ Association (Nadigar Sangam). In his statement, Nassar said the legendary star’s mortal remains would be placed at Cenotaph Road, Teynampet, for fans and well-wishers to pay their respects.

What Led to Her Hospitalization

Sowcar Janaki was admitted to Kauvery Hospital in Alwarpet earlier in the week after her health suddenly deteriorated. Doctors attributed her passing to age-related complications and respiratory issues, and she was under intensive care in the days before her death. Her hospitalization was first shared publicly by actor Kayal Devaraj, and several members of the film fraternity, including colleagues from Nadigar Sangam, visited her at the hospital.

A Career That Spanned Four Generations

Born Sankaramanchi Janaki on December 12, 1931, in Rajahmundry, she rose to fame with her debut in the 1950 Telugu film Shavukaru, directed by L.V. Prasad. The film’s success gave her the title “Sowcar,” which stayed with her name for the rest of her career.

Over the decades, Sowcar Janaki acted in nearly 400 films across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi cinema. She also performed in over 300 stage shows and worked as a radio artist early in her life. Her versatility allowed her to share the screen with some of Indian cinema’s biggest icons, including M.G. Ramachandran, N.T. Rama Rao, Sivaji Ganesan, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Jayalalithaa, and Dr. Rajkumar.

She was also part of Mahishasura Mardini (1959), one of the earliest pan-Indian Kannada films, which placed her among the pioneering leading actresses to work across multiple South Indian film industries.

Awards and Recognition

Sowcar Janaki’s contribution to Indian cinema was formally recognised with several honours, including the Kalaimamani award in 1969 and two Nandi Awards. In 2022, the Government of India conferred the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth-highest civilian award, on her in recognition of her decades of work in film and theatre.

Her final on-screen appearance came in the 2023 Telugu film Anni Manchi Sakunamule, closing out an acting journey that began in 1949.

Tributes Pour In

Following news of her death, tributes poured in from across the Indian film industry. Actors including Jr NTR, Kamal Haasan, and Chiranjeevi remembered her as a towering figure of South Indian cinema whose work influenced generations of actors and filmmakers.

Sowcar Janaki is survived by her three children and her granddaughter, actress Vaishnavi Aravind, who has continued the family’s legacy in South Indian films. Her younger sister, Krishna Kumari, was also a well-known actress in her time.

A Legacy That Will Live On

For millions of moviegoers across South India, Sowcar Janaki was far more than a supporting presence on screen. Her passing closes a remarkable chapter in Telugu and Tamil film history, one that spanned the golden age of Indian cinema to its modern era. Her contribution to acting, theatre, and the broader film industry will continue to be remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
