The iconic double-decker buses that once roamed Chennai’s streets are set to make a comeback, this time in an electric version. Sources in the Transport Department have revealed that the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) plans to procure these electric double-decker buses as part of their ongoing modernization efforts.
The city-based Ashok Leyland’s electric vehicle division, Switch Mobility, conducted a test run of an electric double-decker bus in Chennai in August last year, indicating progress towards this initiative.
In addition, the MTC will soon issue bids for procuring 500 electric buses for the second phase of the program, further expanding their fleet of eco-friendly transportation. The corporation has already floated a tender for these buses, marking a significant step towards a greener future for Chennai’s public transportation system.
